Get started with Maze with this step-by-step guide below.
Step 1: Create an account
Sign up on Maze with your email address. When you sign up, you'll receive a verification email. Click on the verification link in your email to verify your account. This step is required to activate your Maze account.
Step 2: Choose a project type
To start testing with Maze, you can import a prototype for a User Testing project, or create a Discovery Project. If you are creating a User Testing project, you have to import a prototype. Maze supports Adobe XD, Figma, InVision, Marvel or Sketch prototypes.
When you import a prototype, a project will automatically be created with a draft maze inside. A project is based on a prototype link and can include more than one maze based on different versions of your prototype.
If you are creating a Discovery project, a project will automatically be created with a draft maze inside once you add a Project name and click Create.
Step 3: Create your maze with blocks
A maze is built out of blocks. Blocks can be missions, questions, or any extra screens you add. A mission is a task for testers to complete. You can build your maze out of missions only or add questions to complement missions data with survey answers.
Please note: each User Testing Project must include at least one mission as that is the basis of testing your prototype with Maze. Discovery Projects do not support missions
Step 4: Set options
You can edit the settings of your maze in Options. To access your maze options, click on the gear icon in the top right corner.
Here are the options available for a maze:
- Set a password: you can set a password to control access to your maze. Only people you share your password with will be able to test your maze.
- Scaled prototype: your prototype is scaled by default on desktop and tablet for a full-screen experience. You can disable this behavior by switching the toggle off.
- Delay success message: you can add a period of time (ms) that will delay the success page when testers complete missions.
- Recording: this option is available for live mazes only. You can stop or restart the recording of your maze at any time. When you stop recording, your maze will become unavailable.
- Delete: you can delete your maze. Please note, this will delete all the data you've already collected. This action is irreversible.
Step 5: Preview
When you create your maze, you can view what the testing interface will look like before starting testing. Click on Preview to check your maze.
Please note, previewing your maze doesn't record interactions. To start recording interactions, move to the next step.
Step 6: Start testing
When you're ready to begin testing, click on Start Testing in the top bar of your maze. This will set your maze live. Click on Confirm & start testing when you're ready to begin testing.
Testing your maze
Now that your maze is live, you can start testing it with people. There are three ways to get your maze tested:
- Copy your link - share your maze with your own testers.
- Hire testers - order results from our curated panel. Learn more about recruiting testers from our panel.
- Social networks - share your maze on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
Step 7: Set link options
There are two options for your maze link. To access these options, click on Copy your link.
- Tester tracking - record every interaction your testers perform with your maze
- Unique session - allow only one unique session per tester device.
Step 8: Analyze results
When testers begin testing your maze, the results will start showing in your dashboard. You can access your results on the Live maze page.
Step 9: Get your maze report
In addition to your results, Maze automatically creates a report for you to review and share with your colleagues, executives, and stakeholders. Read more about your maze report.
Now that you're a pro, create your maze to start testing.
